Sale of coarse rice drops but little impact on prices
Staff Correspondent
Wholesalers at Karwan Bazar yesterday said their sales of coarse rice
have dropped significantly due to success of open market sale (OMS)
and Bangladesh Rifles' (BDR) fair price outlets, but it had little
impact on prices.
Prices of egg, chicken and fish continued to rise in kitchen markets
across the city and elsewhere in the country yesterday.
Meanwhile, BDR shops saw a huge rush of people, mostly of middle- and
low-income brackets, since OMS and the food directorate's direct sale
of rice were closed on the weekend.
Many returned home empty-handed after waiting in queues for hours.
In some wholesale markets, prices of coarse varieties went up by Tk 10
per maund (37.32 kg) yesterday, but it did not affect the retail
price.
The price of eggs rose by Tk 2 per hali (four eggs) in retail outlets.
Eggs were selling between Tk 20 and Tk 22 a hali yesterday.
Chicken sold between Tk 100 and Tk 110 per kg yesterday while only a
week ago, it cost between Tk 90 and Tk 95. The price of fish rose by
Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg in kitchen markets in the capital.
Wholesalers said sales of finer varieties of rice have remained
steady, but the price increased in both wholesale and retail markets.
It climbed by Tk 20 to Tk 30 per maund in wholesale markets
yesterday.
The retail price of fine rice rose by Tk 2 to Tk 4 per kg in one week.
It now ranges between Tk 43 and Tk 47 a kg.
