Certain things may indeed be unwanted by (or unacceptable to) Javed
Iqbal Kaleem (or is it M.J.Iqbal?!), a member of the Jamaat i Islami,
which is an extremist organization with deep rooted connections to the
Talibans and the Al Qaeda. But that doesn't make them unwated/
unacceptable to the civilized world. Moderate Pakistanis understand
this simple truth on their own, but others need it to be hammered into
them. An example of the latter is General Pervez Musharraf who
candidly confesses in his ghost-written autobiography that he was told
in no no uncertain terms right after 9/11 that he had to be either
against terrorism or for it. Faced with the ultimatum from a low level
US state department official, the General quickly agreed to be against
terrorism (though, on the sly, he still maintained relations with
them).
General Pervez Musharraf, of course, belongs to the cabal of
kleptomanic Kakul graduates who have made it a career to show off
their valor only against civilians, be it in East Pakistan or
Balochistan. But essentially they are cowards who know that it is the
better part of valor to surrender to forces that can fight back. That
is why the Kakul graduates had surrendered within two weeks in East
Pakistan when they faced the Indian army after having a field day
against unarmed civilians for nine long months. And that is why
General Pervez Musharraf quickly capitulated to the ultimatum ("you
are either against terrorism or for it") from a low level US state
department official. What else can you expect from the General who
didn't even have the decency to claim the dead bodies of his soldiers
after the Kargil ignominy?
The Talibans, the Lashkar i Toibas, the Jamaat i Islamis etc. are not
well wishers of USA (or of civilized society) by any stretch of
imagination. They are all willing and ready to re-enact the 9/11 at
the slightest chance.
USA is well within its rights to speak up or even take unilateral
action against terrorists who have not only taken refuge but even
continued with their terrorist plots from within foreign countries.
Tough luck if Jamaat i Islami member Javed Iqbal Islam (or is it
M.J.Iqbal) finds that unwanted/unacceptable. He'll just have to learn
to live with it.
And as for Sharia law in NWFP (or in Saudi Arabia, for that matter),
it has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with upholding
the tyranny of male supremacists. The male supremacists in Saudi
Arabia, for example, exhibit unabashed determination to monopolize the
driver's seat both literally and figuratively. UN would be well
within its rights to use force to annul the cruel laws of Saudi Arabia
and NWFP.
