Myanmar authorities extend detention of deputy opposition leader

Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST
Feb. 14, 2008

Myanmar's military government extended the house arrest of the deputy
leader
of Aung San Suu Kyi's party by another year, shrugging off demands for his

release.

The extension of Tin Oo's detention, which the National League for
Democracy
party called "meaningless and unjust," came just four days after the
ruling
junta announced it would hold a constitutional referendum in May and a
general election in 2010.

The junta's announcement was the first time it had set dates for applying
its so-called roadmap for democracy, a process from which the country's
pro-democracy movement has so far been excluded.
