Panic buying triggers fresh rise in rice prices

Prices of rice marked fresh rise on Sunday in different areas in the
city with a section of consumers, apparently panicked following Indian
restriction on rice ex****t, purchasing more than usual quantity,
traders said.
In many areas including ****halpara, Kathal Bagan and Jatrabari in
the city, coarse rice varieties Guti and Sharna were found selling
between Tk 34 and Tk 36 per kilogram, up by Tk 2 within a day.
Prices of medium and fine grades rice also increased Tk 2 to Tk 4
per kg in many retail shops.
Traders at Karwanbazar said they experienced significant increases
in their sales on Sunday.
"Many regular customers bought more today and we found them panicky
on the news of Indian ex****t ban and abnormal international prices,"
said a retailer.

claimed that wholesale prices remained more or less unchanged on the
day, but said suppliers from North Bengal hinted at increased prices
for next lots.
"My supplier from Dinajpur told me that next consignment, to be
trucked on Sunday, of coarse Guti rice would cost Tk 1,180 per maund
(37.3 kilogram) against Tk 1,120 on Saturday," Bilu Mia, a wholesaler
said.
