Panta-Alu Bharta replacing Panta-Ilish as hilsha price much too high
Our Correspondent . Barisal
Panta-Ilish (watered rice with fried Hilsha fish), the traditional
food for welcoming the Bangla new year, has been replaced by Panta-Alu
bharta (with mashed potato) as the price of a standard-sized Hilsha
has been hiked up to Tk 1,000 per kilogram in retail markets on
Sunday.
Most of the food sellers in the city and organizers of Pohela
Boishakh festivals said the price of one plate of Panta Bhaat with one
100 gram piece of Hilsha would exceed more than Tk 100, so they had to
find alternatives with different types of Bharta (mashed vegetables)
instead of the much loved fried Hilsha.
Panta-Alu Bharta, Panta-Daal Bharta, Panta-Begun Bhaji, Khichuri-
Dim Bhaji and other dishes as well as different types of Pitha (cake)
will be the favourite dishes this Pahela Boishakh, they said
hopefully.
