Tolerances average in electronic circuits.  Computers exist. 
Tolerences add in thermonuclear fusion.  There is no useful control
possible, desktop fusors to whole stars.

In principle it doesn't matter how the aperture of a filled bucket of
water is oriented - no privileged coordinate frame!  In practice, it
does matter.
