Some folks think that democracy is not im****tant. People will die in
Myanmar
because of the lack of democracy.

And, let us not forget Katrina, deaths occurred because of an incompetent
(but elected) administration. Other than the scale of misconduct, what
else
is different?

First, the elected administration that mishandled Katrina lost the next
election. This "throw out the bums" does not guarantee that the newly
elected
people will be excellent, but it does provide an incentive to elected
officials.

If you want to stay in office, pay attention to detail and do as good as
job
as you can.

Tyrants have no similar incentive (except in so far as they may fear
revolution).

Second, in a democratic society, the press will re****t the incompetence
and
misconduct of the elected officials. In Myanmar, the press is not
re****ting
the fact relief is being delayed by the generals. In the case of Katrina,
the
press re****ted the incompetence of the Bush administration for all the
world
to see.
