Subject: [freeburma] Australians sup****t NLD's call for UN intervention (
Responsibity to Protect)
Decisions of the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma, Forum,
Monday
May 12, 2008
That this meeting of the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma
condemns the constitutional referendum of May 10 and May 24, 2008, as
grossly unfree and unfair, and calls on the international community to
refuse to accept it.
That this meeting of the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma calls
on the Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and the Australian Government to
urgently request the UN Security Council, using the UN Charter
Responsibility To Protect, as well as the governments of India, Thailand,
China, Russia, and other ASEAN states, to press the Burmese military
government to allow immediate and massive access to Burma by international
aid agencies to address the humanitarian catastrophe following Cyclone
Nargis.
That the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma sup****t the
candlelight
vigil for Burma on Saturday May 17, at 5pm in Town Hall, Sydney, and
consider the need for other protest actions depending on the response of
governments to the call for action on access to Burma by international aid
agencies.
That the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma request John Kaye to
write to the Federal and NSW Education Ministers to ask them to explore
the
options for the creation of a new institution to study Burmese affairs,
such
as an Institute for Burmese Studies, which would enable a far better
informed public and government debate about how to engage with the
challenges of Burmese society.
