Well, no. It was a democracy but it was imperfect. Please notice that I
did 
not claim it was a perfect democracy in 1776. Quite the contrary. It
lacked 
many of the qualities necessary to be called a democracy today.

For example, in the 1700s thru the middle 1800s, you had to own land to be

able to vote.

Yes, I am. I am calling the pre-Civil War USA a democracy.
