According to the UNDP statistics, about 30% of the people in Cambodia
are under the poverty level if poverty is defined as a daily earning
of 1 dollar of less. However, if the poverty level is increased to 2
dollars, then the percentage of poverty in Cambodia would go up to
around 70%.
At the same time, World Bank outgoing chief in Cambodia said that the
country should be able to lift about 1% of the population out of
poverty every year. From these statistics, we can also postulate that
it would take somewhere between 30 to 70 years in order to completely
eradicate poverty out of Cambodia.
Should the people of Cambodia take the time to patiently endure these
kinds of suffering and regard that economic disadvantage is mainly an
act of fate or should they refuse to live by the law of old fa****oned
rules?
Different people have different opinions.
The United Nations Millennium Program plans to eradicate world poverty
by year 2020. Will Cambodia be able to follow that plan that is
designed by the experts?
I have a different thought on the subject of poverty. I would look
upon it as a social, ethical and psychological challenge rather just
merely an economic variable. From that perspective, the ability to get
to where one wants to go is mainly a matter of drive, energy and
motivation. Time, in that case, is very relative. This is also true in
physics and astronomy.
