Cuba-Nicaragua Boost Educational Cooperation

Havana, Oct 2 (acn) Cuba and Nicaragua are strengthening cooperation in
the field of education through the implementation of the Cuban teaching
method "Yes, I can" in that Central American country.

Cuban Education Minister, Luis Ignacio Gomez, arrived in Managua on
Monday, to review with his Nicaraguan counterpart, Miguel de Castilla,
the state of bilateral relations in the educational sector.

Gomez, who was welcomed at Managua's international air****t by De
Castilla, will also meet with eight Cuban consultants who are
supervising the development of the literacy campaign undertaken in
Nicaragua.

According to the Cuban minister, another ten specialists from the
island will shortly join the efforts being carried out in Nicaragua to
declare the nation free of illiteracy by 2009.

Gomez noted that Cuba plans to sup****t the continuity of the studies up
to sixth grade for all the people who learn to read and write thanks to
the literacy campaign.

The Cuban minister will be bestowed with an Honoris Causa Doctorate
degree by the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, in Leon, 90
kilometers northwest from Managua, where he is also scheduled to
deliver a keynote lecture on the educational system in Cuba.

The bestowing of the distinction responds to an historical nexus
established with that university since the triumph of the Sandinista
Revolution in 1979 when Gomez acted as consultant for Higher Education
in Nicaragua.
