Colombia: In Savage Verbal Attack on FARC, Uribe Takes Step Backward

Bogota, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) President Alvaro Uribe launched a savage
verbal attack against the Colombian Armed Revolutionary Forces (FARC),
in a speech that contrasted with the negotiations in Venezuela for an
agreement between the government and the guerrillas.

In a meeting at the General Santander Cadet School Tuesday on the
anniversary of the National Police, Uribe asserted that if FARC top
chief Manuel Marulanda "comes out of his hideout" to meet Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez, he would be taken down.

The president said Marulanda has suggested not meeting Chavez because
he could be attacked by the army, and said the guerrilla leader "has
good intuition, because the public force would go for him any time."

According to Uribe, the government has taken steps to facilitate the
negotiations by the Venezuelan president to favor a humanitarian
exchange, but he has had to endure FARC representatives "bragging to
international media from the city of Caracas."

He called on Presidents Chavez and Nicolas Sarkozy, of France, who will
meet in Paris November 22, to consider that what he called the criminal
group of FARC is in the middle.

Such an attack by the Colombian president is a continuance of his
"immovable" position on a dialogue with the insurgent group.

This is basically his refusal to demilitarize a space in the country to
facilitate such a dialogue.
