Validity is not the issue here. If 20,000 people sign then the State
Parks people who are meeting soon to look at this matter might feel
obliged to restore the plaque. If nobody signs then they can simply
assume that no one cares. I would respectfully suggest that online
petitions are the perfect medium for engaging and manifesting public
opinion on an international scale. If a lot of people sign then it is
more likely that a lot of people care about the issue. What else can
we do? All go to Alabama and wave placards? Not practical. An online
petition at least provides some means of expressing deeply held
beliefs.
