-- A former surgeon wanted by authorities in Australia for allegedly
botching surgeries was arrested in Oregon on an extradition warrant, a
newspaper re****ted.

Dr. Jayant Patel is wanted in Australia on manslaughter charges
stemming from his work there in a rural government hospital, The
(****tland) Oregonian re****ted.

Patel also is charged with causing grievous bodily harm, negligence
and fraud, the newspaper said. The Indian-born doctor faces three life
sentences if convicted. He was working at the Bundaberg Base Hospital
in Queensland.

Authorities allege Patel, 57, "schemed to hide his history of
professional misconduct from officials at an Australian hospital," the
U.S. attorney's office said in a memo filed with the court Tuesday.
"Once on staff, Patel bungled surgeries with tragic results."

Patel told a judge he could "most likely not" afford to hire a private
lawyer.

Federal Magistrate Dennis Hubel asked Patel, who lives in a $990,000
house, to fill out a financial affidavit before a detention hearing
Thursday, the newspaper re****ted.
