Are we today treating the indigenous peoples of North America with
such brutality as China has treated the Tibetans? The Cultural
Revolution was not very long ago, and back then the Chinese government
kept claiming that countries like the United States were horrible
places ruled by the cruel capitalists while China was the place with
real freedom!

If China were as free a country as the United States, *then* we would
think it reasonable to be even-handed and think of people seeking
Tibetan independence as just trouble-makers. But the brutality of the
Communists, their goal to completely control and destroy the religious
beliefs cherished in the hearts of the Tibetan people, is what makes
the difference. We do not treat aboriginal peoples this way today.
