The biggest mistake, of course, was made on Friday 13 July 2001 in Moscow.

MOSCOW (AP) -- By awarding the 2008 Games to Beijing, the IOC sent a
resounding message to the rest of the world: The Olympics should be about
opening doors, not closing them.
The International Olympic Committee put aside human rights concerns in
making
their historic decision, hoping to foster further change in the world's
most
populous country.

Pull the other one. In progress now, especially in Tibet, is the Olympic
event known as trying to teach an old dog a new trick.
The date "the eighth of the eighth, 2008" may well sound inscrutably
auspicious, but in the minds of number-feti****sts surely "Friday the
thirteenth" dilutes any eight-based auspiciousness with some
suspiciousness.
