At the present time, it appears that the Chinese can not achieve freedom
with 
huge loss of life and suffering.

In the end tho, you are right in one respect: it will be the Chinese 
themselves who achieve their own freedom.

It may come in a bloody rebellion (which would be terrible), it may come
thru 
a non-violent revolution (think Gandhi in India) or it may come by 
negotiation (think the end of apartheid in the Republic of South Africa).

But it will come.
