Beijing/Windhoek - A Chinese arms ****p carrying weapons for crisis-hit
Zimbabwe looked as if it might have to head for home Tuesday with its
lethal cargo.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said China Ocean ****pping
Company which owns the errant ****p the An Yue Jiang had decided to
recall the ****p because Zimbabwe could not take delivery of the 77
tonnes of weapons and ammunition onboard.
Reacting to the slew of international criticism of the ****pment, which
comes amid spiralling attacks on the opposition by sup****ters of
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in the wake of disputed elections,
the spokeswoman Jiang Yu said the delivery was 'completely normal.'
The contracts covering the ****pment had been signed last year, she
said, and had nothing to do with the elections. China did not get
involved in the internal affairs of its trading partners, she added.
The announcement came as the ****p appeared to be fi****ng about on the
high seas for a ****t in which to offload its cargo for overland
****pment to landlocked Zimbabwe.
The ****pment contains millions of bullets for AK-47 assault rifles as
well as mortar bombs and rocket-propelled grenades.
'Those weapons were not going to be used on mosquitos but clearly
meant to butcher innocent civilians,' Zimbabwe's opposition Movement
for Democratic Change said in a statement Tuesday.
The party claims 10 of its members have been killed and scores injured
in revenge attacks by Mugabe party faithful after the country's March
29 presidential elections, in which MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai has
claimed victory over Mugabe. The official election results have not
yet been released.
The An Yue Jiang ducked out of the South African ****t of Durban on
Friday after a court barred the trans****t of the cargo across South
Africa and dockworkers refused to offload the cargo. Mozambique had
also refused it permission to dock in Maputo ****t.
The vessel was sailing west Tuesday, towards Angola, but its exact
location was unclear.
As an international boycott call by the International Trans****t
Workers' Federation gained momentum Namibian rights activists had been
been preparing to go to court in that country Tuesday to block it
docking there.
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has also criticized the ****pment amid
re****ts of pressure by the United States on southern African
governments to reject the vessel.
'The Chinese can play a very useful role in Zimbabwe without (sending)
firearms,' Mwanawasa, chairman of the 14-country Southern African
Development Community (SADC) said late Monday.
Zimbabwean Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa had defended the arms
deal as Zimbabwe's legitimate right, saying he couldn't understand the
fuss.
