Lama Monks are recruited at the age of 14. It is a Mao era China
imposed rule that infants cannot be committed to religious vocation.
14 years is a compromise since at 14 the child has some idea of what
he is heading into. Committment is a parental choice, not the child's.
This religious education and training makes them good for nothing
else. The monks do not have the skills to engage in profitable
employment outside religion.

Their religious devotion is almost irrelevant to ordinary life. The
monks beg for alms during the rare religious festivals. They have no
voice, no flock and no income as would be possible to an equivalent
pastor of a Christian church. They cannot enjoy the ordinary company
of the opposite ***. Celibacy is mandatory.

If you were a young lama you would want to kill someone too.

It is my strong belief that religious studies that commits a person to
a lifetime vocation should be upgraded to a post secondary pursuit.
The child must be given an ordinary schooling first and learn some
employable skill outside religion. After high school at the age of 17
or older that person is mature enough to make that decision on
religious studies and religion as a lifetime vocation. It will be the
death of lamaism. But it will be a justified demise for the price of
true freedom of Tibetans.

In the National Geographic [Atlas of China] ed. 2008, Page 88 on Lhasa
has this sentence.

"Finally, in 1950 the People's Liberation Army overwhelmed weak
Tibetan forces (almost half of Tibet's people were otherwise occupied
as monks in monasteries)."

As the DL asserts Tibet had been self governing since the early 1900s.
If half the Tibetans were monks the burden on the other half to
produce enough food for all much have been horrendous. And Tibet is a
very poor land. Does any Tibetan want to go back to the good old
days? You decide.
