Chinese children abused by capitailists; rescued by a newspaper.

Here is some good news from China:

"Child Labor Cases Uncovered in China By DAVID BARBOZA (May 1, 2008)

SHANGHAI ‹ China said Wednesday that it was investigating whether hundreds
or
perhaps thousands of children from poor areas in the southwest part of the

country were sold to work as slave laborers in booming coastal factory
cities."

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/01/world/asia/01china.html

How is that good news, you ask?

The problem existed even when there were no news stories about it; so the
news that authorities were admitting the existence of the problem and
trying
to solve is definitely good news.

The absence of news accounts of problems is not, in a country like China,
evidence of a lack of problems.

And please notice that the evidence of the existence of this problem was
first disclosed by NEWS MEDIA, not by the authorities.

"The child labor scandal . . . was uncovered by Southern Metropolis, a
crusading newspaper based in Guangzhou, in southern China...."

Indeed there is reason to believe that, in absence of this "crusading
newspaper", the scandal would not have been disclosed. Quoting further:

"The Liangshan child labor case is quite typical," says Hu Xingdou, a
professor of economics and social policy at the Beijing Institute of
Technology. "Chinašs economy is developing at a fascinating speed, but
often
at the expense of laws, human rights and environmental protection."

.....

The newspaper did not identify the coastal factories where the children
worked but the re****t said one was a toy factory in Dongguan, and that it
had
not been difficult for the journalists to uncover the labor scandal.

"Since journalists could discover the facts by secret interviews in a few
days," Southern Metropolis wrote in a separate editorial on Tuesday, "how
could the labor departments show no interest in it and turn aside from it
for
such a long time?"
