Speculation of the Empire's demise ....
As usual, is quite premature. America is unusual in history,
in her unmatched ability to remake herself, constantly. Many
of her adversaries failed to grasp that aspect of this young
nation, often to their own peril. As Imperial Japan and Nazi
Germany, pre-WW II top ranking military powers of the world,
learned belatedly, about the seventh ranking one - the USA.
The reticent weakling remade herself into a global hegemony.
While expensive, Europeans are already paying that price for
gas, or very close to it. By all measures, they aren't doing
too badly. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that such an event
will be a game changer. Americans should, and probably would
change their wasteful ways. Cheap gas is addictive. Which is
not good for the soul of the nation.
Nor for the health of Planet Earth .... :)
