USA 2008: one small tremor in America's deep south

by "Albert K. Fung" <akwfung@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 11, 2008 at 07:56 AM

One harbinger of a giant tsunami ....

For weeks, the Democratic Party leaders and super delegates,
were loosing much sleep, over an up-coming and banal special
election in a bulwark of America's deep south, the 1st cong-
ressional district of South Haven, Mississippi. It gave the
world luminous icons of Americana, William Falkner and Elvis
Presley. It also voted, overwhelming, for the gentleman from
Texas, twice. The election was to choose the replacement for
their outgoing congressman, Rep. Roger Wicker.

The Republican Party brought in money bags and a big gun.

It smelled trouble in this multi-decade long Republic strong
-hold. The National Republican Party's mobilized their money
and political machinery to lend support for their candidate.
And Vice President Cheney was flown in to campaign for him.

And they wanted to locally test a general election strategy.
They flooded the local media with negative ad's, linking the
Democratic contender with Sen. Obama and his pastor the Rev.
Wright, questioning their patriotism and leftist ideologies.

Now that the election is over, the Republicans are in shock,
and awed by the Teflon quality of Illinois's junior senator.
Party elders are calling for deep soul searching. Their fear
- a Democratic landslide in the general election. Democrats,
on the other hand, particularly the super delegates, breath-
ed a collective sigh of relief. This is now abundantly clear
- that Sen. Obama survived Rev. Wright, bitter-gate and all.
Fearing the proverial train leaving the station without them
Democratic super delegates are piling on, to the obama camp.

Politics, after all, is the art of the possible .... :)
