A Pertamina official I worked with in Indonesia told me this story.
He had been sent to Holland for training and the hotel he was staying
at, a Dutch Hotel, served Dutch food. After some weeks of eating
potato, potato,potato, he said he was almost crying. How could he ever
finish the course if this was all he had to eat.
He finally worked up nerve enough to ask someone at the school if
there was anyplace that he might find rice to eat. The person he asked
was shocked, "Don't you know that Amsterdam is famous for its
Indonesian Restaurants?" the chap asked. "Just down the street and
around the corner from your hotel is one of the finest Indonesian
restaurants in the city -- that is why we had you stay there".
Much embarrassment.
He said that he was amazed to find an Indonesian restaurant in
Amsterdam and not only Indonesian food but they even spoke Indonesian.
(He also noted that he was barely 20 years old and it was the first
time he had ever been out of Java.....)
