Well, what sort of choice is involved.

Are you choosing a mate? In that case, do not choose your close family 
members. The risk of genetic defect is too hight.

Are you choosing an employee? In that case, you might well want to choose 
someone who is culturally, biologically and in every other way, distant
from 
you. That will increase the chance that someone in your business will find

the solution to various problems. Diversity is healthy and strong.

Are you choosing a musician? In that case, you might well want to choose 
someone who is distant so they can expose you to different musical 
traditions.
