Well looking back on the thread immediately before the post in question it

was specifically referring to the English. Saying that I don't think the 
Scots or Welsh are in reality likely to be any better at languages. I 
remember the first time I ended up being embarrased at fellow countrymen.
It 
was on my honeymoon in Austria. There was a foursome from Edinburgh in the

same hotel who obviously hadn't made even some basic attempt at learning a

few basic German words. Why bother when all they needed to do to make the 
waitresses understand them was to speak very loudly?
