Out of college I took a job as intern at a school up the River. Used to
walk
down to Malpas, Tristan & Isolde crossing &c, one of the best inland walks
in the county [when it wasn't 3 am in the morning and you were tracking an
epileptic run-away, hoping like hell they didn't try and cross the river
at
low tide - depth of mud = lethal] then sometimes carry on into 'the bright
lights' of Truro.
Best mud around was at Penryn, only a foot or two and with plenty of
rag-worms, and old bottles which were worth a lot. Put a dozen [worms, not
bottles] in a can and then go back to the north coast, climb down a cliff
in
the dark, and fish all night with a couple of other blokes stupid enough
to
do the same :))
Once I got to stay on the south side of the Tresillian R, on Lord
Falmouth's
estate for a few days - just outside it [I think the placename is St.
Michael Penkevil] is an estate-owned hamlet with a church which has the
most
palpable sence of evil I ever experienced in the whole UK.
Man! We'll be doing real Cornish ghost stories soon.
Cordially, Phil Innes
