Cuba, Forty-Seven Years later

Cuba, Forty-Seven Years later…

Forty-seven years ago – on April 17, 1961 – due to a huge mistake,
inexplicable mistake in terms of military and political logic, the
President of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy, determined
the disaster that was the landing at Playa Girón, Bay of Pigs. As some
remember with sorrow and others with ire, the landing there of some
1,500 members of the 2506 Assault Brigade formed by young Cuban men,
ended in a failure that consolidated the most opprobrious totalitarian
tyranny ever suffered by any country of the Americas, that of Fidel
Castro. That tyranny consolidated also with the enormous military,
economic, and political sup****t of the Soviet Union. As a consequence of
this disaster, of this historical mistake, the Cuban people will mark
half a century of enslavement on January 1st, 2009.

The mistake made by the newly inaugurated President Kennedy is evident
if one takes into consideration that the planning of this military
action was made during the Administration of President Dwight
Eisenhower, who not only was a politician but also an experienced 5-star
general. The normal thing would be not to interrupt or alter the plans.
However, significant changes were made, beginning with the landing site
and by not giving the offered air cover that was indispensable for the
military action of the Cuban patriots, an action that was organized and
financed by the government of the United States of America. In other
words, looking at what happened, there was treason against the Cuban
patriots who went there to fight based on a plan that suddenly was not
followed-through. The Cubans who landed indeed fulfilled their historic
commitment.

Since 1961 to the present, every April 17th is remembered by all those
who, Cubans and non-Cubans, are conscious of what the enslavement of
Cuba has represented not only for that nation but also for other nations
of the world. The painful case of Cuba has had negative and tragic
consequences in other countries of the Americas and Africa.

It is always good and fair to remember how Cuba's enslavement came
about. The efforts of the Cubans to fight for the freedom of their
homeland have in the landing of April 17, 1961, a beautiful and sad
testimony that Cuba was lost for other reasons, not for a lack of
heroism on the part of the Glorious 2506 Assault Brigade.
