Cubans are free to speak to their minds. I understand that complaining
about things is something of "national s****t" there. And no one to my
knowledge has ever been arrested for simply making their views known.

I also believe that Cuba is one of the most democratic countries in
the world. In the last national elections in January, the overwhelming
majority voted by secret ballot in favour of the government and Cuba's
socialist system. Only about 5% registered a protest vote. And despite
being widely covered in the international media  this time, there was
not a hint from any quarter -- not even from Miami -- that this was
anything but a clean vote. (See "Democracy in Cuba" at my website.)

On human rights in general, allegations against Cuba look like the
proverbial Sunday school picnic when compared to those against the US
these days and many of its allies around the world. (See "Human
