I was of course referring to the global effort to eradicate
smallpox by the end of the decade of the1960s, which
of course we did, thanks preeminently to the firmness of
our collective resolve focused on a singular, existential
purpose, the likes of which has not been seen ever before
in history, or since. I was also referring to white America's
dispro****tionate reaction to the Civil Rights Movement,
which, at least initially, was based more on fear of social
disintegration, than on moral rectitude.
