Hajj, head of army operations, and three bodyguards were also killed
in Baabda suburb near Beirut on Wednesday.
(live-PR.com) - Brigadier General Francois al-Hajj, head of army
operations was a leading contender to take over as army chief from
General Michel Suleiman when he becomes president.
Five people were killed and several wounded by a car bomb that
exploded as Hajj's convoy drove through Baabda, a suburb that houses
the presidential palace and several embassies. Military headquarters
and the Defence Ministry are located in nearby Yarze village.
The blast occured at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Hajj's car hurled from 50
metres also set other vehicles on fire. Several buildings were damaged
the metal pieces littered the streets.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has said that Army Commander
Gen. Michel Suleiman will be the next president for Lebanon, local An
Nahar re****ted last Wednesday.
Berri said Suleiman will become the "real president, enjoying both
internal and external backing."
Gen. Suleiman, 59, has held his post since 1998. He is seen as a
neutral figure in a country where nearly every politician is
considered either in the pro- or anti-Syrian camp.
