IAEA fixing Board date India Safeguards Agreement

 2008-07-10 08:11:48 - Melissa Fleming Spokesperson said the IAEA
Secretariat today circulated to Members of the IAEA Board of Governors
for their consideration the draft of an Agreement with the Government
of India for the Application of Safeguards to Civilian Nuclear
Facilities.

At the request of the Government of India,IAEA sectariate on its way
to to call the board members meet soon to to agree on a date for a
Board meeting when the Agreement would be considered.The Chairman of
the Board is consulting with Board Members to agree on a date for a
Board meeting when the Agreement would be considered.

The
text of the draft Agreement is not public. IAEA Officials will not be
giving interviews at this time.Melissa Fleming Spokesperson in press
release said.

Tokyo meet the Leaders of the Group of 8 countries singled out the IAEA
=B4s key roles in tackling challenges of safe and peaceful nuclear
development - including actions to address climate change - at their
summit in Japan from 7-9 July 2008.

G8 meet at Tokyo the global leaders resolved nuke safety for
environmental upgradation and peaeful purposes.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Group (NSSG), established at the
Kananaskis
Summit and responsible to Leaders, provides technically informed
strategic policy advice on issues that could impact safety and
security in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. We are committed to
continue to consider nuclear safety and security issues. We welcome
continued cooperation with relevant international organizations in
this area, and will promote strong and competent national nuclear
safety and security infrastructure, by addressing both existing and
emerging challenges and establi****ng partner****p relations on these
issues..

Im****tance of International Nuclear Safety and Security Instruments
We will continue to promote international instruments on nuclear
safety and
security, including the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint
Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of
Radioactive Waste Management.

In this connection, we welcome the entry-into-force of the
International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear
Terrorism last year. We encourage broad commitment to and
implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Code
of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources as well
as the IAEA Guidance on the Im****t and Ex****t of Radioactive Sources.
We will further continue to promote IAEA nuclear safety standards and
security guidelines. We call upon all States to join, as appropriate,
and implement the respective international instruments and
guidance.
