In the early 1980-s there was a Soviet border guard, a young conscript, 
that went amok on the Finnish-Soviet border near Vaalimaa, the busiest 
border crossing point in SE Finland. He fled to the Finnish side after 
killing several of his mates. The cause of this was explained in the 
Finnish press to have been traditional Soviet military bullying. I don't 
remember him killing any civilians, though.

In 1978 a fleeing hard labor camp prisoner walked in the Finnair office 
in Moscow and took the Russian secretary, the only person in the office 
at that time, as hostage and demanded a Super Caravelle to fly him to 
America (obviously he didn't have good knowledge of aviation). The lady 
managed to escape and then the Soviet special unit charged in and shot 
the guy before he had a chance to use his gun.

A week later a Russian man took an ax out of his briefcase in front of 
Hotel Intourist in Moscow and started hitting people around. A Dutch 
tourist was killed before the man was captured by the milice.

All of these incidents were re****ted in the western media. The only 
thing published in the Soviet media was a last page few sentence info in 
Pravda a few days after the Finnair incident about "filming of a 
do***entary of milice work on Proyezd Khydozhestvennogo Teatra, the 
street where the Finnair office was.
