The biggest fallacy it has been my
misfortune to have dogmatised was
that Chomsky is unneccessary at
foundation linguitics (ie "Advanced")
level.
Anyone who can read "txt" should
grapple with Chomsky's ideas.
The second biggest is that David
Crystal is a worthwhile source for
quotation-regurgitation.
Some of his work is worthwhile but
I keep finding serious shortcomings
with his own understanding of his own
subject matter.
Big Fish? Small Pond? Only in the
minds of demotivated didacts.
Admittedly he makes our local paper
people look honest and competent,
but that should be cold comfort.
