I think many museums would welcome feedback and constructive criticism
from users. They often spend a lot of time and money in doing user
surveys to find out what their visitors think, and many of them are
quite receptive to new ideas, even though museum curatorial staff are
often not as visible and accessible to visitors as those in libraries,
for example.

A newsgroup or email discussion list is best when it stimulates
discussion, which generally means issues on which different opinions are
held, e.g. "What do you think of the latest exhibition at xxx museum?",
"Should exhibitions tell a story, in sequential order, or should they
juxtapose lots of items and leave the visitor to make their own
interpretation?", "Was it worth paying xxx for yyy?" and so on.
For the more factual questions such as those you suggest, you could try
first the various "****tal" sites listing museums with their strengths
and specialities, such as Cornucopia <http://www.cornucopia.org.uk/>,
the 24-hour Museum <http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/>
and Artefacts
Canada <http://www.chin.gc.ca/English/Artefacts_Canada/index.html>.
No
doubt other countries have similar sites. The WWW Virtual Library
Museums pages <http://icom.museum/vlmp/overview.html>
are also a good
source. If you don't find what you need there, then certainly it is
worth asking for opinions and information on lists and groups such as
this one.
